20 Feet From Stardom
At A Glance: Backup singers live in a world that lies just beyond the spotlight. Their voices bring harmony to the biggest bands in popular music, but we’ve had no idea who these singers are or what lives they lead, until now.
Directed by Morgan Neville, this fascinating movie shines a deserving spotlight on those for whom singing is often chiefly about just sharing in a sense of harmonic enlightenment, not competition or means-to-an-end fame. Predominantly centered around five talented women including Darlene Love, Mary Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill, and Tata Vega, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM tells the stories from the interview recollections of these women as the backbone of his movie, but livens it up with a smartly curated collection of archival footage. More recognizable faces like Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow (herself a former back-up singer) and Bette Midler also pop up, sharing their thoughts both generally and specifically on back-up singing.
