1926/2006: a new look at classic movie theatres

A Tampa Theatre 80th Anniversary Event

1926/2006

Cinema Treasures: A New Look at Classic Movie Theaters

An evening with film historian Ross Melnick

and film industry consultant Andreas Fuchs,

authors of Cinema Treasures

Wednesday, April 19 at 7pm

Join us for an entertaining and lively lecture about the dramatic changes in movie-going and film exhibition that have taken place since 1926. You'll also learn about the important role Tampa Theatre and other similar theatres will have in the future of movie-going. Mr. Melnick and Mr. Fuchs will give personal insight into their award-winning book, Cinema Treasures: A New Look at Classic Movie Theaters, as well as the website, www.cinematreasures.org, sharing anecdotes and personal experiences gathered while working with movie theatres for the last three decades.

The evening will begin with a concert by a member of the Central Florida Theatre Organ Society at the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. After the lecture, the authors will be available for a book-signing.

In USA TODAY, Cinema Treasures co-author Ross Melnick named Tampa Theatre one the 10 great places to revel in cinematic grandeur.   "If you've ever wanted to know what it feels like to see a film inside a vintage atmospheric movie palace," said Mr. Melnick, "this theater is at the top of a short list. Opened in October 1926 by architect John Eberson, it still is delighting local audiences with first-run and classic films, concerts and other live performances."

ABOUT THE BOOK

Cinema Treasures: a New Look at Classic Movie Theatres is one of the most ambitions and evocatively illustrated accounts of the rise of the American movie theater. From early twentieth-century nickelodeons and airdomes, to ornate prewar movie palaces, cozy neighborhood houses, postwar drive-ins and multiplexes, and the latest state-of-the-art megaplexes, witness how leading industry figures, social change, and ever-changing technologies have shaped the fabulous Cinema Treasures in which films have delighted and transported generations of moviegoers for more than a century.  Cinema Treasures received the Marquee Award for Outstanding Book from The Theatre Historical Society of America (THSA)

ABOUT ROSS MELNICK

"Movie theaters are not just buildings. They house dreams, memories, and culture. The venue has always, and will always, be an integral part of the experience. During the heyday of the movie palace, the architecture of fantasy was instilled in each theater to make going to the movies as exciting as the movie itself. Cinema Treasures celebrates the past, present, and future of the movie going experience—all of which come together at the Tampa Theatre." - Ross Melnick

Ross Melnick is a film historian and the co-founder of Cinema Treasures (www.cinematreasures.org), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to movie theatre history and preservation.  Ross has appeared on “CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood,” The History Channel, Fox News Channel, “Cold Pizza” (ESPN2), Westwood One, Telemundo and in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, and a host of other publications in connection with his work for Cinema Treasures, his book, Cinema Treasures, and as the historical consultant to Loews Cineplex Entertainment for the company’s 100th anniversary in 2004. He has also published articles in journals such as The Moving Image and Film History and regularly speaks at conferences and to the press about motion picture and motion picture theater history.  Ross spent several years in the marketing departments of Miramax, MGM, and DreamWorks and in the distribution arm of Sony Pictures. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in American Studies from Brandeis University and a Master of Arts in Critical Studies from the UCLA Department of Film, Television and Digital Media, where he is currently working on his Ph.D.

ABOUT ANDREAS FUCHS

"The Tampa Theatre is a prime example of a classic theater—one of architectural, design, cultural, social, and historical significance. At the same time, the Tampa holds a special place in the hearts of moviegoers. We thank the Tampa Theatre management and its team of volunteers as well as its large and appreciative audience who all make sure that It Never Gets Old, indeed. Happy 80th Birthday!!!!!!" - Andreas Fuchs

As a third generation cinema operator, who sold his first movie ticket at the age of twelve, Andreas Fuchs works with exhibitors worldwide. He provides editorial services to trade publications, Film Journal International and Film Echo, and his articles appear in The Hollywood Reporter, Auditoria and Cinema magazines, among others.  Andreas has a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Cinema Studies from New York University and completed his Film Studies at Centre Odeon in Paris.  Both are currently on a team developing Now Showing! America Goes to the Movies, a feature-length celebration of the history of movie going in cooperation with NATO, the National Association of Theatre Owners.
