Cutie & The Boxer
A reflection on devotion, sacrifice and the creative spirit, this candid New York tale explores the chaotic 40-year marriage of famed boxing painter Ushio Shinohara and his equally artistic wife, Noriko Shinohara. Noriko came from rural Japan to New York City in the late 1960s when she was 19, and soon met up with Ushio, a Tokyo ex-pat 20 years her senior. He would later fall in with the Basquiat and Warhol crowd and become known for his signature “boxing” paintings, which Ushio would create by pummeling a canvas wearing fighter’s gloves covered in paint.
The heartfelt story is an extraordinary testament to love, marriage and the artistic process – and a examination of the toll creativity can take on a relationship.
