After more than a year of fundraising and six weeks of installation and testing, Tampa Theatre is proud to announce that its long-awaited digital cinema upgrades are in place and fully operational, signaling the beginning of a new chapter in the 86-year-old movie palace’s story.

The new digital system includes:

  • A new Christie CP-2220 Digital Cinema projector, along with servers, processors and other components designed to provide the best possible viewing experience
  • A full array of new speakers behind the screen, laser-aimed to precisely direct clean, crisp and full sound to every seat in the house and integrated into the revamped surround-sound system
  • Major renovations to the projection booth, including new temperature and humidity control systems

This comes after more than a year of vigorous fundraising, during which $93,000 of the $150,000 needed for the project was raised from individual donors, businesses and foundations. But though the equipment is installed, Tampa Theatre president and CEO John Bell says that the fundraising efforts are not over.

“We raised enough to get the ball rolling and have the new equipment in place in time to remain compliant with industry standards for new films and ensure that we can take advantage of classic films being re-mastered and released in the digital format,” Bell says. “But now, we need to finish paying that bill, and we hope that our community – which has already been so generous – will continue to support our efforts.”
