The Wizard (1989)
First of all, yes, it’s kind of one long commercial for the Nintendo Entertainment System. But who cares: every media product aimed at you from the minute you’re born is a commercial for something. And it’s not like Nintendo needed the help, in 1989. A road-trip movie about a young and adorable Fred Savage helping his brother achieve his one dream and simultaneously falling in love with latter-day indie-rock darling Jenny Lewis, The Wizard is a uniquely angled artifact of nostalgia. Whole documentaries have been made about the notorious (and terrible) Power Glove. So you just finished setting up the Nintendo Switch you bought your kid for Christmas; bathe in the ‘80s catharsis of The Wizard. REWIND — it’s so bad.
