Flashdance (1983)

1h 37m / R / Drama

Dates and Times

Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals) has a job as a welder in Pittsburgh, but she has dreams that take her far from the warehouse and her crummy existence. Her passion is dance, and she has always wanted to prove herself in a professional artistic dance company. Will the people who love her be able to help her reach the heights she knows she’s meant for?

Flashdance is pure sensory entertainment, a main line injection of nostalgia. It’s not a particularly novel story – there are countless “achievement of an impossible dream career” movies. Even just on the topic of dancing, you don’t have to search IMDB very deeply to come back with an overflowing handful. But besides its nostalgic appeal, Flashdance is respectful of the legacy of film and dancing – a pairing that worked together since the first director ever called “action.” The performances are iconic, the music still floats to the top, the costumes are exactly what you want out of an ‘80s movie, and it will clench your heartstrings exactly the way it did the first time you saw it.
