Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

2h / R / Sci-Fi Adventure

Dates and Times

Thirty years lie between the third Mad Max movie and the fourth, Mad Max: Fury Road. A lot can happen in 30 years. For one, you might find reasons to replace your lead actor: Mad Max is played this time around by Tom Hardy, filling the role created by a Mel Gibson who is 30 years older and, well, let’s say “somewhat controversial.” For another, you might have decided to create bigger roles for women: Charlize Theron plays Imperator Furiosa, a spellbinding and explosive character who leads the movie down a much more complex and compelling path. But you might also decide that some things are best left the same.

Mad Max: Fury Road has all of the incredible vistas and stunning practical effects that director George Miller is known for. Things have changed in 30 years, but his vision hasn’t been compromised at all; the tale of human struggle in a setting of fantastical extremity, Fury Road is a full-throated, high-octane assertion that a genre movie (sci-fi, post-apocalypse, car chase movie) can be high art. Every once in a long while, action movies actually matter. Not too many have mattered in the last 30 years. Mad Max: Fury Road does.
