The Dinner (2017)

2h / R / Thriller

Dates and Times

Based on the novel by Dutch author Herman Koch, The Dinner is a riveting, disturbing psychological thriller about the lengths we will travel to protect our families, and the people we will sell out to satisfy our own ambition. Richard Gere plays Stan Lohman, a United States congressman engaged in the sometimes dirty business of another campaign; Steve Coogan is his iconoclastic brother Paul, who he’s kept at arm’s distance most of their adult lives. When Stan and his wife Katelyn (Rebecca Hall) invites Paul and his wife Claire (Laura Linney) to dinner at a swanky restaurant, Paul is suspicious.

That suspicion turns to resentment and fear when Stan insists on bringing the family’s skeletons out of the closet—particularly a horrific crime that their children have committed, but which has so far been covered up. Should the brothers conspire together to protect their family? Are the kids better served by being forced to confront the consequences of their actions? Who can you trust to keep a secret? Twice adapted as a movie previously, in both Dutch and Italian, The Dinner weighs loyalty to family against moral uprightness and questions the cleanliness of everybody’s motives in a gut-wrenching, suspenseful shocker.
