The Perfect Storm (2000)

2h 10m / PG-13 / Action-Adventure

Dates and Times

Before people started calling any tragic confluence of unlikely coincidences a “perfect storm,” there was an actual, first Perfect Storm. It happened in 1991, part of what was also called the Halloween Nor’easter of that year. And it left over a dozen fatalities behind. The Perfect Storm is the story of the crew of the Andrea Gail, a fishing vessel caught in that storm, and based on the true fate of the real ship. George Clooney plays its captain, Billy, as he decides to try to make one last fishing trip to collect a final payday before the end of the season; Mark Wahlberg, John C. Reilly and William Fichtner play his crew as they push out beyond their normal fishing grounds and, unbeknownst to them, place themselves right in the path of the deadly storm.

The Perfect Storm is presented as part of Tampa Theatre’s new CinemaSTEM series, which pairs popular movies with experts in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math to lead a post-show talk and audience Q&A about a STEM-related aspect of the film.

After the screening, FOX 13’s Good Day Tampa Bay Meteorologist, Dave Osterberg, will talk about the weather patterns that created “the perfect storm,” what a perfect storm in Tampa Bay would look like, and some tips on weathering the 2018 hurricane season. Dave’s interest in hurricanes began in 1985 when Hurricane Gloria came through his hometown, and he has been predicting the weather in the Bay area for more than 14 years.
