Dates and Times

Wait For Your Laugh makes the claim that Rose Marie has the longest show business career ever, and it’s hard to imagine many other claimants to that throne. 94 years old at the time of the film’s production (she sadly passed away late last year), she was a headlining singer in major theaters at the age of just three. But telling a story of this scale makes for more than just a bio-pic. Wait For Your Laugh presents a cross-section of the last century of popular entertainment, moving from the bedrock of Vaudeville and stage performance through the strata of early radio comedy, the rise of Las Vegas and the eventual birth of the television sitcom – and then going back out on tour. Rose Marie excelled at all of it.

And nine decades of stardom doesn’t come easy, particularly not for a woman. We say certain entertainment icons are “born for the stage,” which phrase can resolve as either compliment or epithet. Interviews with friends and comedy legends Tim Conway, Carl Reiner, and Dick Van Dyke, as well as extensive talks with Rose Marie herself, paint the portrait of a fierce, stubborn woman who knew exactly what she wanted and wasn’t afraid of the lumps she knew she’d have to take to get it. The film’s trailer poses the question: how many roles can one woman play? Rose Marie’s answer was clearly: all of them, and if each one of them is a fight, she’s ready to ring the bell.

In celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Diane Price Herndl – Professor and Chair of the Department of Women's & Gender Studies at USF – will provide a special introduction to the film on Thursday, March 8. On behalf of her department, she will be accepting donations of toiletries for the women at the Spring of Tampa Bay, including bar soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products.
