A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)
A few years ago, the text we wrote to introduce the Korean film The Host to the “A Nightmare on Franklin Street” series decried the travesty of Western audiences’ blind spot for Korean horror. While they still don’t call up the kind of beloved attention that giallo or Japanese ghost stories or Eastern European torture porn does, movies like Train to Busan, The Housemaid and I Saw the Devil have certainly made a place for themselves.
A Tale of Two Sisters, remade in English as The Uninvited (unrelated, confusingly, to the also-outstanding Korean thriller The Uninvited), is the story of Su-mi and her sister Su-yeon, as they are reunited upon Su-mi’s release from a mental hospital. They return to live at their country home where the girls’ widower father has remarried, and the siblings are immediately resentful of his new wife, Eun-joo. As Su-mi and Su-yeon try to resume their regular lives, strange events plague the house, and the conclusion the family finds themselves in will stick in your mind forever.
