Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)
Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are high school buddies starting a band. But they’re not exactly top students, and if they fail history, Ted’s getting sent to military school, taking their dreams of fame with him. Luckily the duo get a visit from Rufus (George Carlin), a traveler from a future where their band is the foundation for a perfect society. With the use of Rufus’ time machine, Bill and Ted travel to various points in history, returning with important figures to help them complete their final history presentation.
Bill & Ted cut the mold for tons of friendly-doofus-based comedies of the future, from Beavis & Butthead to Hot Tub Time Machine to at least a couple Starburst ad campaigns. But the magic that Keanu and Alex brought to the project was their vibe of innocence, genuine care for each other and goodwill towards the world. They might not be valedictorians, but they’re nice, and maybe if you’re nice enough and you work hard enough on learning guitar, you can change the world too.
