Aging, vain actress Madeline Ashton (Meryl Streep) and her mortician husband Ernest (Bruce Willis) are living an opulent but miserable life in Beverly Hills when they receive an interesting invitation — Helen Sharp (Goldie Hawn), the woman who Madeline stole Ernest away from, who has spent the last few years miserable and impoverished, is having a book release party. Curious but apprehensive, they decide to attend. And they find that Helen is younger and more glamorous than ever! Madeline simply must have her secret. She’ll do anything to be youthful and beautiful again.

Like The Substance’s funny, cool aunt, Death Becomes Her (directed by Bob Zemeckis) is a zippy and proficient comedy/body horror about the impossibly high cost of status and obsession, how we’d rather die than look old.
