Join Tampa Theatre for a day of music, film and culture in celebration with our local Haitian community!

Join us at 1:30pm for special pre-show performances and community networking, followed by a screening of the film Mountains at 3:00pm.

FILM SYNOPSIS

In Miami’s Little Haiti, Xavier (Atibon Nazaire) makes a living as a demolition worker while his wife Esperance (Sheila Anozier) holds down two jobs to sustain their cozy household. Their routine is tested when their son Junior (Chris Renois) returns home after dropping out of college. Xavier and Esperance struggle to relate with Junior, who is no longer interested in speaking Creole with them and harbors ambitions of an artistic career path they do not understand. Xavier aspires to buy a more spacious house for his family, but still wakes up every morning, goes to work, and dismantles his neighborhood brick by brick. Yet even as construction vehicles rumble down the block, Little Haiti remains a vibrant community with traditions and rhythms distinctly its own. Monica Sorelle’s tender feature debut is a multigenerational drama that deftly explores the relationships between immigrants and their children, the looming threat of gentrification, and the pursuit of the American dream.

Rebecca Petit, ABC Action News Multimedia Journalist

Rebecca Petit heads up ABC Action News coverage in Polk County, joining the team in December 2020. She’s a native of Miami, Fla., and glad to be back in the Sunshine State. Prior to joining ABC Action News, Rebecca worked at FOX54 in Huntsville, Alabama, and CBS4 in El Paso, Texas. In 2019, Rebecca traveled to Haiti and reported on the country’s weeklong international jazz festival. She interviewed Grammy award-winning musicians and produced two in-depth segments on how Haiti’s flourishing jazz scene is building the country’s tourism industry. Rebecca earned a Master’s degree in Broadcast and Digital Journalism from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She has a B.A. from Howard University, where she graduated with honors. Rebecca is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
