Shiva Baby (2021)

1h 17m / Not Rated / Comedy

AVAILABLE TO STREAM AT HOME!

Hours after a loud and lascivious romp with her (older, married) sugar daddy, college student Danielle (Rachel Sennott) finds herself scrambling to cover her tracks when she accompanies her parents to a shiva. To her surprise and dismay, the guest list also includes her lover, Max (Danny Deferrari), his wife Kim (Dianna Agron) and their screaming baby, as well as Danielle’s  successful ex-girlfriend Maya (Molly Gordon). Trapped within the confines of the somber gathering, Danielle ponders her romantic and career prospects under the intense watch of her family, friends, and judgmental neighbors.

Written and directed by Emma Seligman as an adaptation of her own 2018 short film, Shiva Baby premiered during 2020’s virtual South by Southwest film festival. Critics praised it for its bisexual and Jewish representation, and for effectively conveying the anxiety-inducing claustrophobia experienced by Danielle with a score by Ariel Marx, that was likened to that of a horror film (that’s a compliment).
