MEMBER APPRECIATION SCREENING AT THE DALÍ MUSEUM IN ST. PETE 

When Dr. Anthony Edwardes (Gregory Peck) arrives at a Vermont mental hospital to replace the outgoing hospital director, psychoanalyst Dr. Constance Peterson (Ingrid Bergman) discovers Edwardes is actually an impostor. The man confesses that the real Dr. Edwardes is dead and fears he may have killed him, but his faulty memory means he can’t recall. Dr. Peterson, however, is convinced his impostor is innocent of the man’s murder, and joins him on a quest to unravel his amnesia through psychoanalysis.

Aside from direction by Alfred Hitchcock and star performances from Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck, the most notable thing about Spellbound is, of course, that Salvador Dalí is credited for art direction. His unique imagination was behind the surreal, timelessly surprising dream sequence that Bergman guides Peck through. Psychoanalysis was kind of a fad at the time, and Dalí’s shocking aesthetic sensibilities perfectly matched the public imagination’s idea of the process — it’s just a shame that his intended, nearly 20-minute long scene had to be cut down to just three minutes.

He develops exhibitions, trains docents, and writes audio tours and gallery texts. He has taught courses on Dalí, Surrealism, and film, and has presented on topics including Dalí and Hollywood, Surrealism and Women, and Dalí’s Ghosts.
