Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
We’ve got to be honest — if you don’t already know the plot of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, we’re pretty jealous. You’ve got decades worth of mythology to explore. And it all began here, with the story of a boy growing up on a moisture farm in a galactic backwater, longing for a life with purpose out among the stars. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) never knew his parents. He came of age on Tatooine, a desert planet, helping his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru eke out a living. When an accident with a new droid reveals a secret message sent by the leaders of the Rebellion, a political uprising fighting the forces of the evil Galactic Empire, to a mysterious hermit living nearby named Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), Luke’s entire life is upended and he’s thrown into a conflict that spans trillions of light-years. With the help of a cocky smuggler named Han Solo (Harrison Ford), the two droids R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), and a giant furry Wookiee named Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), Luke has to embrace his connection to the mystical force and muster a courage he never knew he had to rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) from the Empire and its dreadful enforcer, Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones). George Lucas synthesized the Flash Gordon serials he loved as a boy, the Kurosawa movies and WW2 pictures he respected, and the powerful mythic storytelling polished by hundreds of generations to create a new myth, a new tale that calls out to the hero’s heart in us all.
