Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
A quick Google of its title will show that the first official poster for Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to 1986’s iconic hit, lists a release date of 2020. A second, quick search of what date it currently is will reveal that, despite what your heart may tell you, it’s several years later than that. A third would even show that Top Gun: Maverick has already been in theatres for a few weeks. But if there’s one thing Tampa Theatre is the best in the world at, it’s not feeling constrained by the passage of time. And so here, too late for opening weekend but too early to be in a classics series, we present Top Gun: Maverick.
Maverick is the story of an exceptional but reckless Navy pilot, called back into service to train a new generation of blah blah who cares. You know what you’re here for: incredible aerial acrobatics in cutting-edge jets, “biting” one-liners from inhumanly pretty people in Service Khaki, endless nostalgic references to a movie you loved in your freewheeling youth, and sweaty men playing beach sports. Worry no longer, it’s all here. Tampa Theatre doesn’t usually get to hang out with the Summer Blockbuster clique, but we’ve always had a soft spot (and huge audience demand) for the original, so we decided to expand our horizons a little. And we’re not just writing marketing checks the film can’t cash. Maverick isn’t only the biggest hit movie of the year, it’s one of the best-reviewed too — it’s as much about how to face getting older (star Tom Cruise will turn sixty entire years old on July 3) as it is about thrilling action, perfect cinematography and cheesy jokes. We are unironically proud to be able to bring you a movie that people will be talking about for decades. Top Gun: Maverick can be our wingman any time.
