Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994)
Heather Langenkamp played Nancy in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series of films. Sorry, that’s not trivia; this is the beginning of the plot summary. The actress Heather Langenkamp plays the character Heather Langenkamp, who was in the Freddy movies and now has an appointment with New Line Cinema (as itself) to talk about taking a role in an upcoming sequel. Meanwhile, she and the rest of her family begin to have nightmares where Freddy appears — and just like in the movies, the violence he does in their dreams follows them into their waking lives.
The terror of Freddy Krueger was always that he followed you from your dreams into the real world. New Nightmare extends that idea to its logical conclusion: what if the real world was the real world? Intelligent, befuddling, upsetting and vicious, New Nightmare attempts the same magic trick that the old gimmicky horror films of the ‘50s and ‘60s did, with coffins in the lobby and buzzers under the seats — it wants to pierce the last line of defense of the audience. Which is: it’s only a movie, right? Scream is to Halloween as Wes Craven’s New Nightmare is to A Nightmare on Elm Street, in other words, except more so.
This screening is held in the Historic Duncan Auditorium. This space utilizes open seating for this event, seat selection is not required.
