Tampa Theatre is proud to present Whisper of the Heart as part of Art House Theater Day, an annual program bringing audiences together around the globe to celebrate all that art house theaters — and independent film — contribute to our cultural landscape: ambitious and innovative art that provokes, challenges, entertains, and inspires.

Shizuku Tsukichima is a bright fourteen-year-old girl, sweltering her way through summer vacation of her last year in junior high. Her favorite thing to do is to read, but one day Shizuku notices that the name Seiji Amasawa is written on every book she has checked out from the library. She checks other books she has read recently, and the same name is there. Somewhere nearby, some mysterious person who she does not know shares exactly the same taste she does. Every book that she has read, he has read first. An intriguing mystery for a curious, intellectual teenager — but Shizuku’s not sure that she likes it.

The next day, she’s on her way to deliver her father’s lunch when she notices a cat riding by himself on the train. When the cat exits at the same stop Shizuku does, she decides to follow him. That chance encounter leads Shizuku to the home of Seiji Amasawa — and a meeting with a mystical and magical cat who teaches her to look for “the hidden jewels” of life. Shizuku dreams of being a writer. Seiji, from a music-loving family, dreams of traveling to Italy and becoming a famous violin maker. They connect immediately, but their road to happiness together is strewn with obstacles. Whisper of the Heart is the touching, warmly comforting story of how these two, destined to be in each other’s lives even as they are pulled in different directions, manage to carve out a space in their hearts for each other.
